Concert band - Categories
“EOLIA”
the 6th International wind orchestras Competition of Strasbourg -
2008 (6ème Concours
International de Strasbourg pour orchestres à vent – 2008) is open to
all concert bands regardless of the number of musicians they are composed of.
During
the Competition each band must perform :
1)
A
compulsory work in its competing category (see list of compulsory pieces at
end of document )
2)
A
work of its choice to be found in the list corresponding to its category.
These
pieces to be played during the contest must come from the 6th International
Competition of Strasbourg lists. No exceptions shall be granted.

The
above categories range from advanced (A) easy (E).
II-
Inscription formalities
Each
band must send back the registration form, duly completed and signed, along
with a cheque of 200 Euros (this sum will go to the organisers in case of
withdrawal after 1st April 2008) to the following address :

(01/03/2008) at the latest, along with :
·
a
brief historical and artistic biography of the band (max. 20 lines)
·
the
artistic résumé of the conductor (max. 20 lines)
·
a
photograph of the band
·
a
list of the musicians who are to compete, along with the instruments they play,
·

original copies of the scores of the chosen piece.
Scores will be returned to the bands at the end of the competition.
·
if
possible, any recently recorded material (C.D, MP3…)
·
a
layout of the orchestra including each player's exact position.
III)
Conditions of Participation
1)
The
order in which the contestants will compete shall be determined by the
artistic management according to the artistic, material or
organisational contingencies of the competition . Bands and ensembles will be
notified in due time concerning the dates and times of their appearance.
2)
During
the contest, a conductor may conduct several bands or ensembles, or a band
might be conducted by two different conductors.
3)
Members
of the organising and artistic committee shall not be allowed to participate
in the competition in any way whatsoever.
4)
The
artistic management must be informed if any changes are made in the
composition of the orchestra once the registration form has been sent and
shall inform the president of the jury before the competition at the latest.
5)
If
the number of participants in a single category is insufficient, the
Organisers reserve the right to cancel the rounds in that category.
6)
During
the Competition, the participating bands or ensembles must inform the
Organisers of any concerts or performances they may give.
7)
The
Organisers reserve all rights concerning the use of films, videos, photographs
or recordings made during the competition.
8)
The
civil liability of the Organisers will be assured for the duration of the
competition and they are not responsible for any accident to persons or
belongings. Each group must have its own insurance.
9)
Travel
and accommodations are at the expense of the participating bands. However, the
Organisers can recommend an agency specialised in finding
room and boarding at special rates.
IV
– Jury and adjudication
1) The
jury will be selected among internationally renowned and recognized
artists.
2)
Each
jury (one per category or for two categories) will be composed of at least
three members.
3) After
having performed the two pieces each band or ensemble will be given a maximum
of 200 points (100 points per piece for option 1) by the jury according to the
following criteria:
· intonation,
sound, balance
·
dynamics,
phrasing
·
tempo,
rhythm
·
style,
musicality
·
ensemble
playing, general impression
4)
The
jury may attribute a special distinction to a conductor.
5) The
exact composition of the juries will be announced at the beginning of the
competition before the first round.
6) The
conclusions of the jury are to be considered final.
7)
The
bands or ensembles which are not present at the established time of their
performance may be excluded from the competition.
8)
The
results will be announced at the end of the competition, during the closing
ceremony on Sunday, Mai 11th 2008 starting at 16h00.
9) Each
conductor will personally receive an evaluation report a few weeks after the
competition.
V
– Awards
1)
Prizes may be awarded in each category according to the following scale :
· 180
to 200 points
1st Prize
·
160
to 179 points
2nd Prize
·
140
to 159 points
3rd Prize
The jury will award a special distinction to those bands or ensembles having
obtained between 190 and 200 points.
2)
All
participating bands and ensembles will receive a trophy (an original and
unique work of art) as well as a
diploma indicating their results.
3)
The
Organisers and/or their partners may give awards of different sorts : cash,
musical equipment, services, gift certificates etc.
VI-
General Information
1)
The
6th International Competition of Strasbourg will take place in the
“Palais de
la
Musique
et des Congrès”
(5 halls with capacities ranging from 300 to 2000 seats) and in other halls of
the town. The other side events: concerts, performances etc. will take place
in various parts of the city and in the neighbouring towns and villages.
Participating bands may take part in them if they wish
and they will be contacted later on for further information.
2)
During
the Competition a musical and artistic exhibition as well as prestigious
concerts open to the public and to the participants, will take place in the “Palais de
la
Musique
et des Congrès”.
3)
Bands
who wish to do any sightseeing during their stay may contact the following

VII – Final Conditions
1)
The
Organisers and Artistic Direction reserve the right to modify the
planned events to ensure the positive results of the Competition.
2)
Any
complaints regarding the rules and regulation of the Competition
must be made to the Organisers. Only the original French text will
be taken into consideration.
3)
Registration
to the 6th International Competition of Strasbourg for
Wind orchestras implies acceptance of the above conditions and rules.
